A most unpleasant person you’ve met
A month ago, I went out with my ex-classmates to the Escape Theme Park for my twenty first birthday. Since it was a long distance from Ang Mo Kio to Pasir Ris , we met up at Ang Mo Kio Hub. Everybody gathered outside Pepper Lunch. All I heard were growling stomachs. So , everyone agreed to have lunch at Pepper Lunch. The aroma of the heavenly cooked rice with smooth tasty gravy and its chicken cooked with love is able to make even the most depressed person in the world drool with delight. Once the food had arrive, everybody gobbled everything down as though they had not eaten for days. With bloated stomachs, we leaned onto the back of our chairs, leaving shiny and clean plates with not a single grain of rice left.
With smiles spread across our faces, we left Pepper Lunch and set off for the Escape Theme Park. We took the MRT rather than the bus as it was faster. On the platform of the MRT station, we waited for the rapidly moving train to stop and let us board. As the doors of the train opened, people who were alighting at Ang Mo Kio inconsiderately pushed and squeezed their way out. We managed to get in as we waited patiently at the platform unlike other uncivilized citizens who scrambled their way in once the door was open.
There was a teenage boy, who really caught my attention. People were trying to get on to the train while he just stood in the middle of the doorway reluctantly, instead of moving into an open space behind that will not cause any obstruction to the doorway.
An elderly was just about to sit on the seat, when the teenage boy ran towards the same seat and pushed the old lady aside and sat down. Giving an ignorant facial expression, he took out his music set and blasted at full volume ignoring the elderly lady. As soon as I saw such a shameless act I was alarmed. Why do such people even exist? They do not even have courtesy to let their seats to the elderly.
A lady who was elegantly dressed, stepped out of the crowd and told the teenage boy to give his seat to the elderly lady and apologise to her for pushing her to aside politely. Retaliating, the boy scolded the lady for being bossy. The scene was getting unsightly and it was getting on my nerves. I stepped forward and gave the boy a lecture. Instead of him giving his seat up, he clenched his muscle packed hands into a domineering fist and swung it hard into my face. My nose bled. As soon as the blow was delivered, a huge crowd of people crowded around me like a pack of sardines. This caused a huge commotion in the train.
In this dog eat dog society, I have realised to the fact that singaporeans are not giving ourselves that good of an impression we say we are. We, Singaporeans, should think of ways to make us more kinder and curteous. With kindness we can warm up our already freezing society.
